July 4th Festivities

Once again, Team Beech will march in the Banner Elk Fourth of July Parade.  This has always been a great event for our families
to get together over the summer.  We'll gather on the grounds of Lees McRae as before.  If you are new to this event, please ask
and we'll tell you more precisely where to meet.  In general, it is behind the student center.  We hope to see everyone there.  The
athletes should each bring a bag of candy to throw out to the folks lining the street.

In addition, we have traditionally held a fundraiser during this week.  The last time I wrote to you we were going to change our
location to the parade.  However, we've changed back to the pig roast on July 2.  We're making this change for a few reasons:  it is
held at our "home" of Ski Beech; we want to keep strong community ties on Beech Mtn; and the folks on the mountain really want
us to be part of the event.  There will be professional fireworks at the event this year, along with events for the kids to keep folks
occupied while getting their bbq and while waiting for the fireworks to begin.  These factors should all lead to good attendance at
the event and at our table.  To make this happen, we need volunteers.  We need set up, sales during the pig roast, and tear down.
Please reply to Susan West at
susanbestrong@gmail.com and let her know that you can help!  We need volunteers to sign up for
hourly shifts starting at about 5:30!

July 4th Festivities

Once again, Team Beech will march in the Banner Elk Fourth of July Parade.  This has always been a great event for our families
to get together over the summer.  We'll gather on the grounds of Lees McRae as before.  If you are new to this event, please ask

athletes should each bring a bag of candy to throw out to the folks lining the street.

In addition, we have traditionally held a fundraiser during this week.  In the past, we have sold snow cones and popcorn at the
Beech Mountain Pig Roast.  Last year's attendance was a little iffy, and we made almost nothing.  This year, we are moving the
fundraiser down the mountain to the parade.  We will set up in the park at the end of the parade route.  With literally thousands in
attendance, we think this is a great opportunity not only to raise some money (we need new timing equipment this summer), but
also to get our name in front of potential new families.  To make this happen, we need volunteers.  We need set up, sales during
the parade, sales after the parade, and tear down.  Please email Susan West at susanbestrong@gmail.com and let her know that
you can help!

And one last thing.  I am sure that we have some golfers out there.  Who would like to play on Sunday July 3?  Some of us thought
it would be fun to get any interested parents together and play Beech Mountain Club that day.  Any not-interested folks could
probably find others at the pool that day (I'm guessing).  RSVP to Brian Granger at bgranger@carolina.rr.com if you'd like to play
and if you have a time of day preference.  ALL skill levels welcome.

End of Year Banquet

We will be having our end of year banquet this coming Saturday, March 5 at the Beech Mountain Recreation Center.  The dinner
is a pot luck.  Please RSVP to
Lori Byington and include what dish you plan on bringing.  During the banquet, we will recognize
each of our athletes.  It is meant to be a celebration for our athletes for their performance throughout the year.

We will also hold our annual meeting of Beech Mountain Ski Educational Foundation.  During this time, we will review business
issues facing the organization over the coming year, get a financial report and elect new officers to the Board of Directors.  If you
have interest in running for the Board, please email
John.

USSA Race

Best of luck to those participating in the J4-5 Championships in Massannutten this coming weekend!

Amazing Race

All of the athletes who participated in the Amazing Race event had a fantastic time.  It was interesting to see some of our older
athletes get in and team up with the younger athletes.  A special thank you to all of our volunteers and coaches for helping.  A
special thanks to Sue Smolka for organizing the event.  We will have more of these events next year.

End of Year Banquet

The end of year banquet is scheduled for Saturday March 5 at the Beech Mountain Recreation Center.  There will be a dinner that
begins at 5:30.  The dinner is pot luck, so please bring a dish that is large enough for your family to share.

The banquet is mostly a celebration of the year for our athletes.  As part of that celebration, we like to do a slide show (thanks Jim
Dunn).  Please select 2 pictures of your athlete skiing/snowboarding and email that to Jim Dunn via this link
(skibumdunn@carolina.rr.com) .  We have grown so large this is the best way to get everyone included.  Please send those
pictures within the next few days!

We will also hold our annual meeting after the banquet.  The annual meeting is where we elect new officers to the Board.  We have
several Board members who are moving on.  If you are interested in serving please let me know.

That Saturday morning, we will be hosting our annual Parents against Team Beech race.  I think this is finally the parent's year...

Please make sure you try to make the event.  All athletes will be recognized and get a medal during the banquet.

Race Weekend Wrap Up

Our Ski Race team was well represented from NC to Snowshoe, WV this weekend.  While we were busy hosting our race at Ski
Beech, Casey Thompson, Zach Dunn and Josh Gast were represent Team Beech at the USSA event in Snowshoe.  They all
represented Team Beech well!

Those of us at Beech Mountain on Sunday enjoyed a little Spring skiing.  I want to thank the entire organization for coming
together to host the event.  Almost every High Country family participated, so there are too many people to name.  However, I
would be remiss if I did not thank Robert Jones for organizing the course set up, doing the timing, and hosting the banquet.

Part of what makes our organization different than other organizations is that we use volunteers to host our races.  I truly believe
that when we all work together, it helps our team unity.  Better team unity then leads to camaraderie, that helps create the best
environment for the athletes to learn and have fun.

Thanks again to all of our volunteers for today!
